➢ What is a forum RPG?
Forum RPGs, also known as play-by-post RPGs or text-based RPGs, are online role-playing games that take place on internet forums. Unlike traditional tabletop RPGs played in person, forum RPGs rely on written text to describe the game world, characters, and actions.
To participate in a forum RPG a person must create a character that is approved by the moderators of the game. Guidelines to create one's character can be found in the character creation tab.
Once a character has been approved, the player can make a post looking for people to play with, or to respond to such posts. Once a playing partner has been found, one of the two players creates a thread in the forum, within the location the game takes place in.
To play, players post in turns in the created thread. Each player writes from the perspective of their character, describing their actions, thoughts, and interactions with other characters and the game world.
During gameplay, players are allowed to create NPCs such as bartenders, lowrate criminals or passerbys. These characters do not need to be approved and can be simply named and described in the game itself. If the NPC becomes a regular visitor within games, it can be posted in the NPC section of the forum with a short decription similar to the character form. Players are adviced to keep in mind that anyone can use site NPCs in their games, though it is polite to let the poster of an official NPC know that the NPC is involved in a game. In such a case, the original creator may even join in to play the part of the npc.
Most games on the site are hosted between players and focus on the characters and their asparations rather than the greater plot of the game. Occasionally, the moderators may post events in which all players are welcome to post in.
Events range from furthering the main narrative of the game to seasonal holiday rpgs and festivals. During events, the moderator hosting will play several NPCs and Fears; if character deaths are a posibility in the game, the moderators will advertise this before the beginning of the event.
